p.m. the heavier rain and more widespread by 10:00 p.m. over the bay bridge, the embarcadero. we will time it out on futurecast with rainfall totals, coming up. >> pam: breaking news.out of san francisco tonight.where police shot a suspect in the hunter's point area. the suspect was wounded and has been transported to the hospital. it happened near the intersection of george court and ingalls street. no word on what lead up to the shooting. this follows at least 5 officer-involved shootings that took place in the bay area over the weekend. we have a crew on the way and will give you more information when we get it. >> pam: the coming rain has some people in san francisco's west portal neighborhood on edge. residents there are still trying to dry out their homes. following last weeks water main break-- which has left some of those homes un-

liveable. kron 4's dan kerman was in the neighborhood with the latest. >> reporter: the west portal neighborhood. had been impacted from the water main break last week. three homes have been issued a been r ed tag.. >> we have small pockets under the cement but nothing major. >> this home is adjacent where her parents could also live in just right near her. >> and definitely we lost a room downstairs. >> there was always a gap between the houses but it has now gotten bickers and now it is leaning which causes us to worry.

transportation security adminstration says it wants to start spending more time looking for high threat items, like explosives, and less time confiscating small things like hand held knives and sporting equipment starting on april 25th, airline passengers will be allowed to carry on knives with blades shorter than 2.36 inches long and ½ an inch wide. knives with locking or fixed blades will not allowed and the knife can not have a molded grip. box cutters and razor blades will remain prohibited. the tsa will also start allowing passengers to carry on some sporting equipment, including ski poles, hockey sticks, up to two golf clubs, pool cues and lacrosse sticks. they will also allow bats that weigh less than 24 ounces and are shorter than 24 inches. the bat can be longer than 24 inches as long as it meets the weight limit. once again, these new changes take effect on april 25th. in the newsroom, charles

clifford, kron 4 news. >> pam: venezuela's six-term president hugo chavez has died. chavez was considered both charismatic and controversial. he once called president george w. bush - "the devil." he thrived on confrontation with washington and his political opponents. chavez used his country's vast oil wealth to pay for social programs and build a political base among the poor. he had been fighting cancer for two years. he was 58 years old. >> two men say. they were asked to leave a mall outside sacramento. because they were holding hands and kissing. the same-sex couple says, they just want to be treated the same as everyone else. it seems harmless enough. but when two gay men - daniel chesmore and jose guzman, did it at the roseville galleria over the weekend. they say. a security guard asked them to leave. gay couple kicked out of mall? >> we were asked to leave. >> this local television

approach to mineta san jose international airport this encampment is scheduled for a cleanup by the city of san jose because of its size in fact notices have been posted what started out as one tent from a man simply know ans dennis now has grown into dozens of tents and lots of trash, some reports say there are as many as 100 separate encampments in the meddile of this area is this randon street sign readiing emory and walnut street then there is this sign reading no tresspassing, this land is closed to the public no entry or occupation but what i noticed, as if every homeless emcampment there are lots of bicycles and this electric go-ped scooter valued at 1200 bucks getting a fresh charge from this gas powered generator which is let's stop the video here is also powering this lap top located inside

shoreline in anticipation to see those new lights. earlier, i spoke with a restaurant manager up and down the embarcadero. i asked them about the big crowds. what a restaurant manager says that he has been booked for two days. >> all of the staff, the king's horses in king's men. >> i've only seen pictures but i am excited i think that there are going to be a lot of people. we are here to get a prime spot. >> how exciting? >> i think that it is unique. and unusual and i would say the one word is bodacious. >> a lot of anticipation. here comes the rain is coming down harder. maybe it can hold off a little bit

longer. plenty of excitement. >> pam: thank you. this project involved the latest in lighting technology and architecture. kron 4's tech reporter gabe slate shows us how it all works and what to expect after the lights turn on. >> the bay bridge lights project is considered a new form of art called a light sculpture? this is not the first one. other bridges and the eiffel tower have light sculptures attached to them? but this will be the largest light sculpture in the world. its not just little lights that will twinkle on and off? it is a hi-tech computer controlled light show. these lights are individually programmed and will create stunning designs and patterns. lights will flicker on and off, and dim and brighten in waves and pulses on the 1.8-mile span between san francisco and treasure island. each light is individually

controllable with 255 levels of brightness; together they form an animated screen that can be seen from miles away. 25,000 led light bulbs were attached to the bridge cables by hand. the leds are attached 12 inches apart on 300 vertical cables and held in place by zip ties and specially designed, 3-d- printed clips. the lights will only be visible only from the north side of the bridge. drivers on bridge will not see the lights? this was done on purpose as to not distract drivers. the nightly illumination will run from dusk till 2 am. this led lights are so energy efficient they will only use $11,000 worth of electricity over the two years. this show it will run for 2 years. the project managers predict that this light spectacle will generate an estimated $97 million in extra income for the region by attracting more visitors to the waterfront area to view

washington -- after going home last week just before 85 billion dollars in forced spending cuts took effect. this is the first full week since the mandatory budget cuts began on friday, and there's another potential roadblock-- government funding runs out march 27th unless lawmakers act. house speaker john boehner says the house will pass that bill this week. "spending is the problem here in washington and our goal is to cut spending, not to shut the government down." >> pam: the forced spending cuts have impacted the f-a- a. they will close 173 air traffic control towers at small and medium sized airports on april seventh. the first furlough notices have also hit the army. they warned some workers that they will face a twenty percent pay cut for five months. a winter storm is slamming the upper midwest tonight.
